"A moment during the New Year holidays: Maintenance habits to keep your vintage furniture in good condition for a long time"
Hello! I'm Tanabe, a staff member at the Yamato store!
What kind of year was this for you all?
The end of the year and the beginning of a new year.
Now that we are spending more time relaxing at home, why not take the time to take care of the furniture that adds color to your daily life and show your appreciation?
Vintage furniture is a unique piece that has come to us after many years.
With just a little effort, the wood's appearance will deepen and it will maintain its beautiful appearance for generations to come.
So, this time, we asked our repair craftsman, Naito,
~Self-care tips you can easily do at home to enjoy your beloved items for a long time~
Let's listen to it! 🔨
STAFF Naito
1. Add moisture and shine to wood. Oil up wood materials.
As wooden vintage furniture dries out, its surface can become dry and lose its original luster. To protect it from the dryness of winter, we recommend oiling it during this time of year.

Q. Is there any reason why you recommend oiling wooden furniture?
Naito: "In winter, heating dries out the room more than you might imagine. Wood is like people; when it dries out, it becomes more susceptible to cracking. If you apply oil to it at the end of the year, when you have some time to relax, the wood grain will be restored."
Q. How to choose the best cloth for oiling
Naito: "I'm often asked, 'Do I need a special cloth?' But the most convenient thing to use is a soft cloth such as 100% cotton with little pilling, like an old 100 % cotton T-shirt . New cloths can have stiff fibers, and synthetic fibers can repel oil, but cotton cloths that have been washed many times are soft and can absorb just the right amount of oil, allowing it to gently blend into the wood surface.

It's great to repurpose your worn-out companions into furniture companions.
Q. Are there any precautions to take when oiling ?
Naito: "The most important thing to remember is not to apply too much oil at once. If you apply too much oil, the wood won't be able to absorb it all, leaving the surface sticky, which can actually attract dust. The golden rule is to apply a small amount, thinly, following the grain of the wood. Finally, be sure to wipe carefully with a clean, dry cloth until no more oil remains on your hands. This one little step will make a huge difference in the finished feel."
2. Leather care to enhance the character

Q. What are some tips for enjoying your leather sofa for a long time?
Naito: "The balance of moisture and oil is important for leather sofas and chairs. They tend to dry out easily, especially during the heating season, and if left unattended, this can lead to cracks.
After removing dirt with a leather cleaner, try spreading a thin layer of conditioning cream on the leather.
The leather becomes soft and moisturized, and the more you use it, the more it conforms to your body, allowing you to maintain the unique texture of vintage leather for a long time."
lastly
