nice to meet you! This is Kanaoka from the Osaka store staff :)
Christmas is over and 2022 is finally coming to a close.
Has it been a wonderful year for everyone? ?
All of our staff are very happy to have so many people visit us this year! Every time!
In the previous Osaka store blog, Ms. Yamada gave us a detailed explanation of the design of antique furniture legs 😊
This time, I would like to talk a little bit about my favorite Windsor chair, which has legs that have been made using "turning" as mentioned in the previous story:)
Although it is not as easy to understand as Yamada-nee-san's explanation, I, Kanaoka, who is my junior, will do my best to write it.
The story goes, `` What exactly is a Windsor chair? ''
A chair shaped like the one in the thumbnail, whose seat, back, and all other parts are made of wood, is called a "Windsor chair"!
It is said to have originated in England, and appeared in rural areas around the 18th century.
Regional furniture (furniture made locally), which was very rare at the time, became accepted even by the aristocracy.
The Industrial Revolution was also the biggest reason why the Windsor chair became popular throughout England.
You've all heard of it at least once, right?
Demand for chairs increased greatly in London, where the working population increased explosively due to the Industrial Revolution.
The Windsor chair that was often used at that time was made of simple materials, had a relatively simple overall form, and was easy to manufacture.
The name "Windsor Chair" comes from the famous Windsor Castle in High Wickham .
A leading theory is that the name came from the image that people in London had of the chair coming from Windsor Castle.
Because of its simple form, it is easy to manufacture, and through trial and error by craftsmen, its comfort, ease of use, and durability have continued to improve.
I can understand why it continues to be loved even today.
The Windsor Chair, which has been loved for such a long time, was created with an emphasis on convenience and comfort rather than design.
This is also one of the characteristics of regional furniture (furniture made locally).
*Many pieces of aristocratic style furniture are designed with convenience in mind!
Emphasis on usability = easy to use in public situations! In fact, it has been used in various facilities such as schools, libraries, pubs, and churches.
Since it is entirely made of wood, it is an item that can be easily incorporated into your home or store fixtures :)
The "Windsor Chair" actually has different names depending on its form!
I will briefly introduce it with photos 😊
First of all, [Comback Chair].
It was created in the early days, and the upper structure of the chair looks like a comb.
It's called a comb-back chair.
Unfortunately, currently, SHARK ATTACK does not carry it and there are no images.
(If you're interested, please search for it! It's a super simple shape!)
However, we currently have a fanback (fan-shaped backrest) type, which is a derivative of the Combac chair!
Although simple, the detailed curves are eye-catching. It has become such an item.
Next, [ Bowback]
The name comes from the bow-shaped frame that surrounds the backrest.
Although it appeared late in Combat, in addition to its cute form,
It was highly praised for its sturdiness (unlike Combac, it has a back frame, so it doesn't break easily even when you put a lot of weight on it), and it was very popular!
The closest items currently available at SHARK ATTACK are:
This item is from the Yamato store!
If I had to add one piece of information here, it would be
Chairs with built-in arm rests called arm bows (like the one in the image below) are said to be older than chairs without arms!
Most of the early versions of the Windsor Chair had arms attached.
However, as their popularity progressed and their use in public facilities began to increase, it is said that the number of devices without arms began to increase for reasons such as portability or placement in small spaces.
That's why a Windsor chair with arm bow is worth it! ! !
If you classify it in detail, there are many types of derivatives like fanback,
In fact, Windsor chairs are made not only in England but also in America.
Designers are ReDesigning (redesigning past works),
The Windsor chair has a lot more charm than I can convey here.
Among them, I love the "Windsor Chair" called "Smoker's Bow" :)
This chair was also known as the ` `chair loved by smokers'' because it was used in pubs and other places to drink coffee or enjoy a conversation while smoking a cigarette .
Not only is it extremely comfortable to sit on, it's also cool to have such a cool name😭
Actually, I was really excited when it arrived at our Osaka store last time!
It stings people who sting it, right?
It's currently sold out, but I just hope it comes back in stock :)
This article is long, but thank you very much for reading!
We look forward to your visit and use in 2023!
Happy new year🐇
