【大阪スタッフ】Fat Lava あれこれ<PART1>

Happy New Year everyone! It's already the third week! !

This is Yamada, a staff member at the Osaka store.

Thank you for your continued support of SHARK ATTACK and Osaka store staff this year too ^^

Today, we would like to talk about Fat Lava, which we carry a lot at our store!

First of all, what is Fat Lava ? From the basic premise.

Fat Lava is a genre of pottery produced in West Germany between 1940 and 1990 that was particularly popular from the mid- 1950s to the mid- 1970s .

Literally translated, it means " Fat " and " Lava ".

As the name suggests, most of them have a bumpy texture like lava or a rough and rough texture, but depending on the manufacturer, their expressions vary, such as beautifully painted ones or metallic ones, and they have unique characteristics. Flower vases and tableware were born.

This time, I would like to introduce some of them by manufacturer!

[ Bay Keramik ] 1933-1997

It was founded in 1933 by Eduard Bey in Lansbach - Baumbach, Germany. Initially, the company produced unglazed terracotta tableware and cooking pots.

Later, in 1936 , glaze was introduced as an important element to create the unique colors and textures of Fat Lava . This is the glassy part that covers the surface of ceramics and enamel!

Many of the designs are composed of curved or angular designs, and the manufacturer is characterized by the contrast between black lines and bright colors.

Many of the most cutting-edge avant-garde designs and famous designers were created at the time, and this manufacturer is loved by collectors all over the world.

Introducing two items from Bay Keramik .

Here is the first point.

This sticker began to be used in 1973~ , so it is one of the later Bay Keramik vases!

This is a lovely item with a pattern that resembles closed petals and a rich brown color gradation.

Also, this pattern is engraved on the bottom.

Larger Fat Lavas often have the manufacturer's logo embossed on the bottom.

If the manufacturer's sticker is missing, you may be able to tell which one it is by turning it over and looking at the bottom.

Here, the font of “BAY” has a peculiarity! This font with an angular A and a lowercase Y is probably used from the early 60 's to the late 70 's.

This gem is accented with a vitamin color that peeks out from inside against the dark-colored surface!

[ Carstens ] 1933-1997

Carstens is a manufacturer that still has a core of fans.

Carstens was originally part of a large ceramics company group, first founded in 1900 by Christian Heinrich Carstens.

His older brother, Christian Heinrich Carstens, had a pottery workshop in West Germany, and his younger brother, Christian Ernst Carstens, had a pottery studio in East Germany.

After World War II, his sons founded Carsten Tönnieshof in Tönnieshof, West Germany, in 1945 after losing their factories in East Germany.

It is famous for its reddish-brown clay-based vases, and from the 1960s to the 70s produced vases of various shapes and glazes.

The bond between the founders, the Carstens brothers, is reflected in the Carstens manufacturer's logo, ``Twin House.''

Two house marks above Carstens initial C.

The older brother's former workshop in West Germany and the younger brother's former workshop in East Germany are marked.

One point from Carstens .

This item uses a bright yellow color that resembles sunlight.

Judging from the markings on the bottom, I believe it was manufactured between 1969 and 1977 .

In Fat Lava , there are trends in the colors used each year, with pastel colors and primary colors in the 1950s , bright reds, oranges, and deep browns increasing in the 1960s , and bright and intense yellows and purples in the 1970s . , darker, more vivid hues such as fiery orange began to be used.

Some of the glazes that create these colors contain toxic substances that cannot be used today, and some that may never be used again...

It might be interesting to try to guess the year not only from the logo but also from the colors used.

Now! There are many manufacturers that we have not yet fully introduced.

This is getting long, so I'll stop here for today.

We hope that you will enjoy knowing at least a little bit about the background of each manufacturer when you pick them up ^^
