J67 chair designed by Ivan A. Johansson
The J67 dining chair was designed by Ejvind A. Johansson in 1957 and manufactured by the Danish company FDB Mobler.
I feel that the J67 is a design that quietly stands out for its high level of perfection.
The back panel penetrates the seat, so the entire seat can absorb the force applied to the back.
It's typical of FDB Møbler that their products are made using the strength and joints of the wood itself, without relying on metal fittings.
The two slits in the back panel are a design accent and also serve as a structure that allows for flexibility when you lean your back against it.
When you actually sit on it, you can clearly see that it is not too stiff and naturally follows the movements of your body.
The seat is flat, but when you look down at the legs, you'll see that they taper slightly outwards, providing a firm sense of stability for the entire chair. Despite its light appearance, it is this sense of balance that gives it a sense of security.
The unique wood grain and the luster that comes with use give a sense of depth that is not found in new items.
It doesn't make any special claims, but the more you use it in your daily life, the more you'll appreciate how easy it is to use and how comfortable it is.
*About engravings, stamps, labels, and manufacturing dates : The underside of the seat of this item is engraved with "59, 10, 3," which is likely to indicate the manufacturing year, month, and lot number. This suggests that this item was manufactured in the 1950s or 1960s.
The hexagonal stamp is a feature commonly seen in the mid-1960s to early 1970s and is a characteristic of original FDB Møbler products manufactured during this period.
FDB markings have come in different forms depending on the period, such as paper labels (1950s-60s) and ink stamps (mid-1960s onwards). Some vehicles are missing engravings or labels, which is thought to be due to peeling or disappearance due to aging.
[ FDB Møbler / (FDB Møbler) ]
FDB Møbler was founded in 1942 as part of the Danish consumer cooperative FDB (Fællesforeningen for Danske Brugsforeninger, now Coop amba).
FDB itself is a union founded in 1896 at the end of the 19th century, and continues to work to protect the interests of Danish consumers.
This democratic and functionalist idea that "furniture should not only be beautiful, but also enrich people's lives" influenced the general philosophy of so-called "Danish Modern" and still has a strong influence on current Scandinavian design culture.
[ Ejvind A. Johansson / (Ivan A. Johansson) ]
Danish furniture designer born in 1922. He designed many chairs, especially for FDB Møbler, and devoted most of his career to the development of FDB furniture.
His designs are known for combining warm forms that make the most of the characteristics of solid wood with ergonomic functionality.
FDB's philosophy of "beautiful, high-quality, and affordable furniture" and its innovative projects were a perfect match for Johansson's practicality.
